Promotif: Jurnal Kesehatan Masyarakat (PJKM) permits limited and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence and AI-assisted tools when such use supports, rather than replaces, human authorship, scholarly judgment, critical evaluation, confidentiality, and accountability.
This policy applies to authors, reviewers, editors, editorial staff, and other contributors involved in manuscript preparation, peer review, editorial decision-making, and publication. It covers large language models, chatbots, automated writing systems, translation tools, image-generation systems, coding assistants, and other AI-enabled applications.

Human Accountability
Humans remain fully responsible for all submitted and published content.
Transparency
Material AI use must be disclosed clearly and specifically.
Human Oversight
AI outputs require independent human review, verification, and correction.
Confidentiality
Confidential manuscripts, data, and personal information must be protected.
AI Tools and Authorship
AI systems, chatbots, and AI-assisted tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors. They cannot approve the final manuscript, accept responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the work, respond to ethical concerns, disclose conflicts of interest, or fulfil other authorship obligations. Human authors remain responsible for every claim, source, analysis, interpretation, image, and conclusion.
Permitted Uses
AI-assisted tools may be used as supportive instruments under direct human supervision. Acceptable uses may include:
Language Editing
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence flow, and stylistic refinement.
Readability Improvement
Improving clarity and coherence without altering scientific meaning.
Translation Assistance
Supporting translation when the complete output is reviewed by a competent human.
Formatting Assistance
Assisting with non-substantive formatting, structure, or presentation requirements.
Coding Assistance
Supporting code drafting or debugging when authors validate logic, outputs, and reproducibility.
Early Organisational Support
Assisting with an outline or early organisation under full author control.
Prohibited Uses
AI must not be used in ways that replace intellectual contribution, fabricate evidence, compromise confidentiality, misrepresent research, or conceal how the manuscript was produced.
Substantial Manuscript Generation
Generating substantial sections such as the abstract, methods, results, discussion, or conclusion without meaningful human authorship, critical review, and transparent disclosure.
Fabricated Data or Participants
Inventing data, participants, interviews, quotations, field notes, observations, study records, or research events.
Fabricated Analysis or Results
Producing, altering, or presenting statistical analyses, qualitative interpretations, or research findings that were not generated and verified through legitimate research procedures.
Invented References
Generating unverified references, citations, quotations, digital object identifiers, or bibliographic details.
Misleading Images
Creating, modifying, enhancing, or replacing scientific images in ways that fabricate, obscure, or misrepresent evidence.
AI Authorship
Listing an AI system as an author, co-author, or accountable contributor.
Undisclosed Material Use
Submitting material AI-assisted content without required disclosure, verification, and human oversight.
Disclosure Requirements
Authors must disclose material use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in a dedicated section titled Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies. The statement should identify the tool, version where available, the purpose of use, and the extent of human review.
Recommended Disclosure Format
During preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [tool name and version] for [specific purpose]. The author(s) reviewed, verified, and edited the output and accept full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the submitted content.
Routine spelling or grammar checking that does not generate substantive content may not require formal disclosure. When uncertainty exists, authors should disclose the use.
Responsibilities of Authors
Accuracy
Verify all AI-assisted output for factual, scientific, linguistic, and contextual accuracy.
Reference Verification
Check every citation directly against the original source and correct all bibliographic details.
Originality
Ensure that AI-assisted text and images do not contain plagiarism, unattributed reuse, or copyright infringement.
Bias and Limitations
Evaluate AI output for bias, omission, distortion, hallucination, and inappropriate generalisation.
Confidentiality
Do not upload identifiable participant data, confidential records, or restricted material to unapproved external systems.
Accountability
Accept full responsibility for all errors, ethical breaches, or misleading content regardless of AI assistance.
AI Used as Part of the Research Method
When AI is used legitimately as part of the study design, intervention, data collection, coding, analysis, prediction, classification, image processing, or other research method, authors must describe the system, model, version, provider, inputs, parameters, validation procedures, human oversight, performance assessment, limitations, and relevant ethical or data-protection safeguards in the Methods section. Such use is considered part of the research methodology and must be reproducible and critically evaluated.
AI-Generated or AI-Modified Images
Scientific Evidence
AI must not fabricate, add, remove, obscure, or selectively enhance features in photographs, microscopy, radiology, gels, charts, or other evidentiary images.
Illustrative Content
AI-assisted conceptual illustrations may be considered when they do not represent research evidence and their use is disclosed transparently.
Copyright and Consent
Authors remain responsible for copyright, licensing, privacy, consent, cultural sensitivity, and truthful labelling of all images.
Use of AI by Reviewers
Confidentiality requirement: Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts, figures, supplementary files, review correspondence, or unpublished data to external AI systems where confidentiality, data ownership, storage, and reuse cannot be assured.
Reviewers remain personally responsible for the intellectual content, accuracy, fairness, and originality of their reviews. AI must not replace independent critical evaluation. Any permitted AI-assisted use in preparing a review must be disclosed to the editor, and the reviewer must verify that the output is appropriate, valid, and free from confidential disclosure.
Use of AI by Editors and Editorial Staff
Editors and editorial staff must not upload confidential manuscripts, reviewer reports, author correspondence, or unpublished material to external AI systems unless the journal has formally approved a secure system and its use complies with confidentiality, data-protection, and contractual requirements. AI may support administrative tasks, but it must not make autonomous acceptance or rejection decisions or replace editorial judgment.
Assessment of Suspected AI Use
PJKM will not treat automated AI-detection scores as conclusive proof of misconduct. Such tools may produce false positives and false negatives. Editors will assess the manuscript, disclosures, internal inconsistencies, source verification, author explanations, supporting records, and other relevant evidence before taking action.
Editorial Actions
Undisclosed, misleading, unsafe, or inappropriate AI use may result in one or more of the following:
