Beyond Library Facilities: How the Learning Environment Shapes Students' Reading Interest and Literacy Engagement

Abstract

This study investigates how the school learning environment affects the reading interest of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Tolitoli. A qualitative descriptive methodology was applied, with data gathered from student questionnaires, direct observations, and interviews with key educational stakeholders. Findings reveal that a supportive environment including physical space, teacher involvement, peer influence, and resource availability contributes positively to reading engagement. Nonetheless, limitations such as outdated materials and inconsistent use of library facilities hinder maximal development. The research offers insights for educators and policymakers to enhance literacy outcomes by optimizing the learning environment.
