THE TECHNIQUES OF OVERCOMING ANXIETY DURING SPEAKING

Abstract

This research explains students’ techniques in overcoming anxiety during speaking. It applied descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, the researchers used questionnaire and interview. There were three significant aspects of the data analysis; data reduction, data display, and data verification. The result of this research shows that students implement fifteen techniques to overcome anxiety during speaking; 1have good preparation, 2memorize unfamiliar vocabulary, 3practice with friends, 4practice in front of mirror, 5do eye contact with audience, 6stay positive, 7keep calm and relaxed, 8holding object, 9take a note or concept, 10interact to the audience, 11use simple words, 12use code-mixing, 13speak loud and clear, 14use gesture, and 15look at the other object around the audience.
