Abstract

ABSTRACT

Bronchial asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. This study aims to describe the nursing care provided to patients with bronchial asthma in the Emergency Department (ED) of Undata Regional General Hospital in Central Sulawesi.

The method used was a descriptive case study on Mr. Y, a 50-year-old man, who came with complaints of severe shortness of breath, restlessness, and the use of respiratory support muscles.

The results  of the study showed a breathing rate of 29 times/minute, oxygen saturation of 93%, and the presence of additional breathing sounds in the form of wheezing. Enforced nursing diagnoses include: ineffective airway clearance, ineffective breathing patterns, and activity intolerance. Nursing interventions include the provision of oxygen through a non-rebreathing mask of 10–15 L/minute, a semi-Fowler position, education on effective cough techniques, and collaboration in the administration of bronchodilators (Meptin) through nebulization. The evaluation results are improvement in airway clearance and breathing patterns, as well as resolution of activity intolerance problems, as indicated by a reduction in complaints of shortness of breath and stabilization of vital signs. The results of this study emphasize the importance of systematic and collaborative nursing care in the management of patients with bronchial asthma.

It is recommended that nurses improve their assessment skills, conduct further research using quantitative or qualitative approaches, and educate patients and their families to support optimal asthma management.
