THE DIFFICULTIES FACED BY STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILLS AT CLASS VIII B OF SMPN 8 SIGI IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2024/2025
Abstract
This study aims to investigates the difficulties encountered by students in developing their Englishspeaking skills in Class VIII B at SMPN 8 Sigi during the academic year of 2024/2025. Employing a
qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through classroom observations, student and
teacher interviews, and documentation. The findings revealed that students face multifaceted
challenges, primarily stemming from three main factors: linguistic (limited vocabulary, incorrect
pronunciation, and weak grammar), psychological (low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, and
anxiety), and environmental (lack of practice opportunities, unsupportive peers, and rigid classroom
atmosphere). Despite these obstacles, most students showed high motivation and enthusiasm for
learning English. The study concludes that addressing these difficulties requires a student-centered and
communicative approach, supported by engaging speaking activities and a positive classroom
environment to foster confidence and competence in speaking English.
