Potential inhibitory effects of palm (Arenga pinnata) starch waste on the development and metamorphosis of Aedes aegypti
Potensi efek penghambatan limbah pati aren (Arenga pinnata) terhadap perkembangan dan metamorfosis Aedes aegypti

Control of Aedes aegypti populations is an important component of dengue transmission prevention strategies. The development of plant-based bioinsecticides has been widely explored as an alternative approach for utilizing natural materials in Aedes aegypti vector control. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of rice (Oryza sativa) straw and palm (Arenga pinnata) starch waste infusions, both individually and in combination, on the development of Aedes aegypti from the egg to adult stage. A quantitative experimental study was conducted using a posttest-only control group design. Six treatment groups were evaluated: distilled water as the control; rice straw infusion and palm starch waste infusion at ratios of 30:70, 50:50, and 70:30; rice straw infusion 100%; and palm starch waste infusion 100%. The addition of palm starch waste infusion reduced oviposition attractiveness and appeared to function more as a developmental inhibitory agent than as an attractant. The addition of palm starch waste infusion began to inhibit egg hatching at a concentration of 50%. Palm starch waste may possess ovicidal activity or egg hatch inhibition effects and may exhibit insect growth regulator-like activity by impairing successful metamorphosis through to the adult stage.
